Enhancing skills and knowledge for women election candidates in Vietnam
Preparing for the May 2021 General Election
In preparation for the election of the Fifteenth National Assembly and the election of deputies and People’s Council deputies at all levels for the 2021-2026 tenure, the ‘Promoting gender equality in political decision making in Vietnam’ project is ramping up and implementing a series of activities. These activities are aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of women candidates and include training courses for women running for the National Assembly and People’s Council deputies and events that focus on disseminating necessary information about the election to voters.

Increasing women’s representation at all levels of politics
Since 2017, Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA, in cooperation with Women’s Union of Phu Yen, Hai Duong and Bac Kan Provinces, has been starting to build capacity and knowledge for women candidates for vying for election to the National Assembly and for provincial and district People’s Council. For the first time, women candidates will be prioritised to attend the training that covers four key skill areas. These include skills on collecting and processing information, contact with the voters, contact with communication agencies and developing an action plan.
Women in Phu Yen Province Prepare for the Election
Two training courses have been held recently for 70 women candidates preparing to run for election. Five of the candidates will be running for the National Assembly and 65 candidates will be running for People’s Council at provincial and district levels.
Vietnam Elections 2021
Vietnam will hold general elections on 23 May 2021 for both the National Assembly and local legislative bodies at all three levels (province, district, and commune). See the map and drop down menu to the left. The results are expected to be released in June. The first National Assembly session will be held in July, mainly to elect top officials of all three branches of the central government.

Local government in Vietnam
Vietnamese provinces are controlled by a People’s Council (Hội Đồng Nhân Dân), elected by the people of the province. The population of the province determines the number of councillors for each province. A People’s Committee (Uỷ Ban Nhân Dân) is appointed by the People’s Council. The Committee is the executive arm at the provincial government level and is responsible for formulating and implementing policy (kind of like a Cabinet). Provincial governments are subordinate to the central government.
