Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA’s partner organisations celebrated May Day by joining events and rallies. Below is a round-up of how they celebrated on May 1.
TIMOR LESTE
Unions and workers celebrated May Day in Timor Leste with a rally and march through the streets of Dili. Union Aid Abroad-APEHDA’s partner organisation, the Working Women’s Centre Timor Leste joined the rally to call for better working conditions for domestic workers and the establishment of a national minimum wage.
PHILIPPINES
APHEDA’s partner organisation, the Center for Trade Union and Human Rights (Philippines), joined other unions in a huge May Day demonstration to demand wage increases to help with the rising cost of living.
Unions also released a joint statement that said: “As we mark International Labor Day, let us not forget that Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr’s first year in office is marred by more than 1200 victims of labor rights violations, including recent killing of Alex Dolorosa on April 24, and countless cases of unionists facing threats, red-tagging, harassment and intimidation.”
CAMBODIA
Unions in Cambodia celebrated World Day for Safety and Health at Work by organising a forum on the theme of safety at work.
INDONESIA
APHEDA’s partner organisation, Local Initiative for OSH Network – Indonesia participated in a May Day rally in Bandung. Speakers mentioned a number of problems faced by workers, ranging from low wages, unpaid overtime, and Occupational Health and Safety issues, such as the continued use of asbestos.
