Looking back at October events in WA:
Unions WA International Conference
The Unions WA International Conference was held on Saturday, 15th October. Key topics included tax justice, privatisation, global inequality and trade justice. Speakers included Kate Lee (Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA), Matt Grudnoff (the Australia Institute), Pat Ranald (Australian Fair Trade & Investment Network) and Ged Kearney (ACTU). Kate said in an email to WA activists: “We know as internationalist unionists, the best way we can build support, understanding and activism is to connect the local to the global. The discussions at the UnionsWA International Conference did an excellent job at connecting the dots for people between the ‘here’ and ‘there’”.
Inaugural WA Dinner
Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA activists held Perth’s first APHEDA fundraising dinner following the conference. APHEDA supporters gathered for a fun and noisy night in Mt Lawley, raising an impressive $8,000. Perth APHEDA activists Peter Stokes (an APHEDA volunteer union educator in Vietnam) and Ruth Ellis contributed some spectacular auction prizes from our overseas offices and partner organisations in the Mekong region. Union Aid Abroad members in Perth say they’re just getting started! See some pics from the night
