Harnessing the Power of Workers to Organise for Climate Solutions in the Philippines
In the Philippines, workers are building their collective power to shape the solutions to the climate crisis.
With climate change already hitting workers in the Philippines, and hitting hard, there is an urgent need to respond proactively to the increasingly severe typhoons, landslides, and droughts that are impacting the most vulnerable workers: poor farmers hit by an on-going drought, indigenous communities displaced by mega-dams, and construction workers exposed to extreme heat-waves.
That’s why Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA is collaborating with the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) union federation and the Centre for Trade Union and Human Rights (CTUHR) to begin climate organising in the Philippines.
📽️ In this video message to Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA members, Meryl Quero-Asa of the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) union federation, explains how this exciting new project will build workers’ power to confront the climate crisis in the Philippines.
“Workers know what it is like to have greedy corporations control everything, they know how to wage struggles that value people over profits.”
“It is not only about workers jobs, but it’s also about system change”
By helping workers access knowledge about how climate change affects their daily lives, supporting union organisers develop the skills to advocate for climate solutions, and by developing climate leaders in workplaces, this collaboration between Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA, Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), and the Centre for Trade Union and Human Rights (CTUHR) will build the power of workers to shape the solutions to climate change in the Philippines.
