Battle of the Brains at Brisbane’s Global Solidarity Trivia Night
Last week, Union Aid Abroad APHEDA’s Brisbane Activist Group held their annual Global Solidarity Trivia night. Here’s the lowdown on the highlights by APHEDA’s National Organiser, Jarred Sferruzzi.
On Friday 27 October, around 100 unionists put on their thinking caps in a battle of wits to see who would be crowned the 2017 Brisbane Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA Trivia Night champion.
Round after round the battle raged on as the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), The Services Union (TSU) and the Queensland Teacher’s Union (QTU) fought for top spot as their knowledge of history, pop culture and flags were put to the test.
It was a close call, but in the end it was the bonus points awarded for having a full table of APHEDA members that saw the NTEU take victory.
Despite giving it their best efforts, the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) fought hard and successfully walked away with this years’ Global Solidarity Wooden Spoon.
While the evening put wits to the test, the overall goal of the night was supporting APHEDA’s global solidarity projects overseas. Holding true to tradition, the organisers from the Union Aid Abroad Brisbane Activist Group went above and beyond.
It was a successful night. Through various fundraising activities including the raffle, auction and ticket sales, thousands were raised to support APHEDA’s projects overseas.
More importantly, thanks to hard work of key activists on the night, 10 fabulous new Union Aid Abroad APHEDA members joined the global solidarity family!
Alongside fundraising efforts on the night, Union Aid Abroad APHEDA members and activists also got behind the ‘Asbestos. Not here. Not anywhere!’ campaign, showing their solidarity by chanting “Not here! Not anywhere!”.
