Hang Hoang, APHEDA Country Manager, accepts recognition for APHEDA Vietnam as one of the 35 most impactful foreign NGOs in the country.

20 years ago, Union Aid Abroad–APHEDA established an office in Vietnam, a testament to the enduring solidarity between Australian workers and their Vietnamese counterparts.

This commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed. On December 20, 2024, the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) recognised APHEDA as one of the 35 most impactful foreign NGOs in the country. Among 379 international organisations, this honour highlights APHEDA’s deep-rooted partnerships and dedication to building a better future.

Since the late 1980’s, APHEDA has supported so many projects for worker’s and women’s equality in Vietnam. Below are two examples, the first is a continuing project co-funded with Irish Aid. The second is a new initiative starting in 2025.

  1. Breaking barriers for women in politics

Despite Vietnam’s progress, women remain underrepresented in politics. Today, women hold just over 30% of National Assembly seats—short of the 35% target. Women leaders, especially in rural and ethnic minority communities, face deep-rooted gender expectations that limit their opportunities.

APHEDA’s Strengthening Women Elected Representatives project is changing that. Through training, advocacy, and support networks, this initiative helps women gain leadership skills, boost their confidence, and step into decision-making roles at all levels of government.

What we’re working for:

  • More women leaders are stepping up for the next election (2026–2031).
  • Stronger policies for gender equality in politics are needed.

When women lead, communities thrive. We are making sure they get the chance to do just that.

  1. Women leading the fight against climate change

Vietnam has pledged to reach net zero emissions by 2050, but on the ground, climate change is already hitting hard—especially in rural and coastal areas. APHEDA’s Women’s Climate Action Project is equipping women’s organisations to take real, practical steps to protect their environment.

What we’re doing:

  • Building women’s unions capacity to develop and implement climate action strategies.
  • Supporting women to lead climate initiatives and increase awareness and change behaviours, creating clean and green environments in their communities.

Two decades of solidarity

For 20 years, Union Aid Abroad–APHEDA has stood in solidarity with Vietnamese workers and communities. From fighting for gender equality to campaigning for the eradication of asbestos, the Vietnam office has proven that grassroots action leads to change.

With continued support from Australian unionists and activists, we’re not slowing down. If you are not a member yet, join us here.
