Australian Karen Organisation Inc. (AKO) and Burmese Community Development Collaboration (BCDC) are honoured to co-host a prestigious Gala Dinner with Dr. Cynthia Maung, internationally respected physician, humanitarian leader, and recipient of the 2013 Sydney Peace Prize.
This special evening celebrates Dr. Maung’s extraordinary lifelong dedication to humanitarian service, peacebuilding, and accessible healthcare for displaced and marginalised communities along the Thailand–Myanmar border.
Guests will hear firsthand about her inspiring journey of courage, resilience, and service amid conflict and displacement, and her continued leadership in advancing human dignity and health equity.
Dr. Cynthia Maung is a Karen medical doctor and founder of Mae Tao Clinic that has been providing free healthcare services for internally displaced persons (IDP) and migrant workers on the Thai-Burmese border for three decades.
◦ Born in 1959 in Yangon, Myanmar
◦ Medical graduate of the Institute of Medicine-2, Yangon
◦ Fled Myanmar following the 1988 pro-democracy uprising
◦ Founded the Mae Tao Clinic in Mae Sot, Thailand in 1989
From humble beginnings as a small makeshift clinic, Mae Tao Clinic has grown into a major healthcare institution serving tens of thousands of patients annually, providing:
◦ Primary and emergency healthcare
◦ Maternal and child health services
◦ Surgical and trauma care
◦ Education and child protection programs
◦ Training for community health workers
Her work has supported vulnerable populations affected by decades of conflict and instability in Myanmar.
