In the face of injustice, unity is power. Melissa, an organiser with the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association and Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA member, is an example of what workers can achieve when they stand together.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Melissa experienced racist behaviour in her own hospital. But she took action. By organising with her colleagues, she helped end the abuse, proving that collective action can challenge even the most entrenched power imbalances.
Today, Melissa continues to advocate for CALD workers, ensuring their voices are heard at a time when racism is rising globally. Her motivation is deeply personal:
“I’m a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) worker, and I got empowered to call out racism,” she reflects. “I realised if I could challenge power imbalance at my workplace, I could do it again collectively in a bigger space.”
“If I don’t fight for this now, my yet-to-be-born child will experience the same as I did. If we don’t stand up for ourselves, then who will?”
This belief in collective action is why Melissa is a proud member of Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA – and why she believes you should be too.
