The Myanmar People’s Summit is a meeting convened by civil society in support of a civilian and democratic government in Myanmar.
The Summit brings together civil society together with the Myanmar diaspora and representatives of government. It is an expression of the strongest support for civilian rule in Myanmar to the ASEAN leaders in attendance in Melbourne at the ASEAN Special Summit, hosted by the Australian Prime Minister from 4-6 March, 2024.
On February 1, 2021, a violent military coup was launched against the Myanmar population. The civilian population vehemently rejected the coup in a widespread Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM). In the three years since, the country has continued to reject military rule, and has organised an effective alternative, civilian government-in-exile, the National Unity Government (NUG) which continues to consolidate its rightful claim to leadership.
This Summit will hear from speakers and will issue a statement to ASEAN leaders from Australian and International civil society.
