For generations, the Talisay community has depended on healthy coastal ecosystems to live and to work. But in 2022, the expansion of the Cebu International Container Port began, putting 500 fisherfolk at risk of displacement and dozens of homes at risk of demolition.

As Indonesia moves toward a promised reduction in its reliance on coal, Union Aid Abroad–APHEDA’s union partners are stepping up efforts to advocate for a just transition for all and ensure that informal workers are not left behind.

Steve McCartney, State Secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) in Western Australia, shared his firsthand experience of negotiating a just transition for workers impacted by the planned closure of coal operations in the town of Collie, which is due to wind down by 2030.

While Nepal is committed to net-zero emissions by 2050, unions are making sure that this transition is just and inclusive—especially for workers in informal sectors, women, and marginalised communities.

A newly formed union, supported by Union Aid Abroad–APHEDA’s partner organisation SENTRO, has won the struggle to have recognition for their union at Metrowear Incorporated, the factory where they produce sportswear for the global brand Lululemon.

Union Aid Abroad’s partner unions from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Nepal joined over 100 trade unionists from Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean to push back against privatisation and advocate for public ownership of energy.
