Across the hills of Timor-Leste, farmers are coming together to transform their communities – from small-scale producers struggling to make ends meet, to strong, organised movements driving food sovereignty, sustainability, and local democracy.

In a powerful step forward for workers’ rights and gender justice, domestic homecare workers in Timor Leste have formed their first-ever union—a historic milestone for the country’s 30,000 domestic workers, the majority of whom are women.

Timor-Leste’s farmers’ movement is growing stronger! In March 2025, farmers from across Viqueque municipality came together in Uma Quic village for a historic occasion – the first-ever congress of the brand new Viqueque Farmers’ Union.

In Timor-Leste, women make up a significant portion of the workforce, but over 60% of them are trapped in informal, low-wage, and often unsafe jobs. But the Women’s Working Centre Timo-Leste (WWCTL) is leading the fight to change this. Here are five powerful ways they’re supporting women workers.
